Time-Resolved Observation of Phase Transformation in Fe–C System during Cooling via X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

The kinetics of phase transformation in the Fe–C system during cooling are great importance for controlling its microstructure and mechanical properties. However, real-time observation has been a challenging task because experimental difficulties. Here, we developed an analytical technique time-resolved via X-ray absorption spectroscopy with time resolution 200 µs. was applied to model specimens: Fe, Fe–0.044C, Fe–1.24C. incubation before multiple steps from ?-Fe ?-Fe (+ Fe3C) could be clearly observed by proposed technique, behaviors were significantly different among specimens. Through change atomic structures at short-range scale detected, which is complementary diffraction that detects only long-range order. can detect structure changes early stage transformations, where often begin scale, provide inevitable information on kinetics.
